A Port Harcourt-
based legal practitioner and human rights activist, Barr. Chijoke Agi has said that the absence of a Chief Judge in Rivers State will lead to delay in dispensation of justice in the state.
Barr Agi, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend, noted  that the absence of a Chief Judge would worsen the glut of cases in the state judiciary.
He described it as an ugly scenario for criminal justice dispensation.
According to him, “the tenets of the rule of law cannot be observed when there is undue delay in justice dispensation. The worst hit is criminal justice where an accused person is remanded in prison custody without access to justice.
He remarked that in our justice system, the accused person who is presumed innocent until proven guilty had continued to suffer untold hardship.
Barr Agi prayed that the state government to expedite action in the appointment of Chief Judge of the state.
He described the judiciary as the last hope of the common man and cautioned that it should not be politicised to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
The legal practitioner called the people of the state to continue to support the present administration in the state in order to reap the dividends of democracy.
It will be recalled that concerned lawyers in the state staged a peaceful demonstration to call for the appointment of the state Chief Judge.
