UCL: Man Utd Tops Group A …City Beats Bayern In Germany

Published

on

Phil Jones scored a second-half winner to ease the pressure on manager David Moyes as Manchester United finished top of Champions League Group A with victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

United, who came into the game having lost successive home matches for the first time since 2002, struggled to match Shakhtar for large periods.

But they got the decisive goal when Jones volleyed in from a corner.

Earlier, winger Ashley Young twice should have scored but shot wide.

Meanwhile, Manchester City staged a fine comeback to end Bayern Munich’s record run of 10 consecutive Champions League wins but they still finished as Group D runners-up behind the German champions.

Bayern were dominant early on as Thomas Muller struck from Dante’s pass before Mario Gotze scored following a corner.

David Silva restored order from close range after Jesus Navas’s cross.

Aleksandar Kolarov then scored a penalty after James Milner was tripped before Milner’s fine finish won it.

It was an amazing turnaround from Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who almost earned the 4-2 they needed to go through as group winners after Alvaro Negredo went close late on.

But after Bayern scored twice in the opening 12 minutes, the fact they turned the game on its head will give them huge confidence as they progress to the last 16 for the first time.
