The Imo State police
command has arrested one Dr James Ezuma for running an illegal motherless babies home in the guise of a non-governmental organisation.
Ezuma was paraded at the premises of the home called Ezuma Women and Children Rights Protection Initiative along with 15 pregnant teenage girls recently.
The state’s Commissioner for Police, Mr Muhammad Katsina, expressed concern with a missing newborn who was sold to unknown persons yet to be identified.
Katsina said the child was delivered on the November 24 by one Chinaza Nnachi, a native of Ebonyi, who came to the home when she was stranded with her pregnancy.
He said all efforts to locate the child had proved abortive as the suspect had refused to lead the police to where the baby was kept.
“So far, he has taken us to Abia where he said the baby was but we were unable to recover the baby; though investigations are still ongoing,’’ he said.
The commissioner said the suspect was also a gun-runner who had been arraigned for unlawful possession of firearms.
“It is pertinent to mention that the suspect was earlier arraigned before an Owerri Chief Magistrate for the offence of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.
“When a search was conducted in the premises, 16 pregnant girls between the ages of 14 and 19 were found; also recovered was an automatic eight loader pump action gun which is a prohibited firearm,” he said.
The police also found 10 unregistered vehicles which the suspect claimed to own, but could not provide any proof of purchase or ownership.
The Commissioner warned parents and guardians to be constantly vigilant to ensure that their children and wards did not fall prey to exploiters.
Nnachi, the 19-year-old mother of the missing child, told  newsmen that she was directed to the home by a lady who said she would be taken care of.
She said her baby was taken away two hours after she put to bed without her consent.
Nnachi said she was given N100,000 by the doctor when she continued to ask after the whereabouts of her child.
