There was heavy traffic jam along Rumuigbo axis of Ikwerre Road as police tried to disrupt All Progressives Congress (APC) rally scheduled for 3.pm last Monday.

The police officer, who led the team, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Akwuonu Allwell, had tried to disrupt the rally but was resisted by APC members, an eyewitness said.

The eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the police had arrived Rumuigbo Civic Centre, the venue of the rally but was resisted by members of the APC.

According to him, the police came with a few vans but when they saw the size of the crowd they had to call for more police reinforcement who arrived the venue with more than twenty vans and started shooting into the air, causing unnecessary stampede in the area.

The eye witness said that the APC members threw stones at the police who fired teargas at them.

He said that the scuffle which lasted for more than two hours also occasioned heavy traffic jam along Ikwerre Road as motorists abandoned their vehicles for safety.

The Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Hon. Tony Okocha, who spoke at the rally pacified the APC members and told them that Rivers people would stand by the truth and that the truth would prevail in the end.

He noted that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for good.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer proved abortive.
