The people of Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni local Government (ONELGA) in Rivers State have joined well-meaning Rivers people and Nigerians to commend the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi on his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political leader of Constituency II in ONELGA and the Isama of Ndoni, Chief Ofili Enebeli, who spoke when he led the people of ONELGA on a solidarity visit to the Governor at Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday, also said his people were loyal and committed to the Amaechi-led administration.
“Your Excellency Sir, we are here today to pay you a solidarity visit and to inform you that the good people of ONELGA are solidly behind you. We are loyal and committed to your Administration and to declare further that where you go, we shall go. Your people shall be our people and your party our party”, Ofili said.
Continuing, Chief Ofili said, “your decision to join All Progressive Congress (APC) was a step in the right direction and we shall stand by you at all time to actualize your dreams to salvage our state from the hands of some undemocratic elements whose target is to control the state fund for their selfish interests”.
The group also thanked Governor Amaechi for the Sure-P Programme which his administration introduced to empower supporters at the grassroots, and further appealed that the programme be extended to their leaders and other supporters to assist them achieve their goals.
“Your Excellency Sir, let me remind you that ONELGA is your second home, in spite of the activities of some desperate politicians who survive through crises and cannot win elections in their wards. We shall remain focus and will not let you down”, Chief Ofili said.
Secretary to the ONELGA Area council of Traditional Rulers, Mr. Andrew Enemuwa who presented a memorandum signed by the President General of Ndoni Community, Chief Enebeli Onyia and others, for the purpose of re-classification of the chiefs in Ndoni Area of ONELGA explained that, Ndoni area is the only place without a first class traditional ruler among the four district of old Ahoada local government area, and urged Governor Amaechi to use his good office to endorse their demand.
According to the report, “Ndoni Area was merged with Rivers State in December 1976 following the Nasir Boundary Adjustment Commission. For this reason, not one of the other traditional rulers in the sixty-nine (69) communities in the Area was recognized by the government. In the last major re-classifications effected in July 1988, Ndoni Area was left out. We the people Ndoni Area believe that your good office will correct these past mistakes as we appeal to you to give full recognition to the key age-long traditional stools in Ndoni area”, Ndoni Community said.
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi while lauding the people of Ndoni in ONELGA for the solidarity visit said, his administration will not relent in fighting for the safety and interest of Rivers people to benefit from the dividends of democracy in the current political dispensation.
The People of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have dumped the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in response to what they described as acts of lawlessness being exhibited by the party leadership.
To this end, the people have joined the All Progressive Congress (APC) which they consider a solution to impunity, anti-progress and undemocratic tendencies.
The voluntary declaration follows a seemingly long awaited question asked by the Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Victor Giadom, concerning their disposition amidst the political uncertainty plaguing the country, at a rally that witnessed massive turnout.
The people consisting of Assembly member, State and local government officials, opinion leaders, youths and women groups, concretized the declaration by standing with a voice vote before embarking on street procession brandishing brooms symbolizing APC and chanting solidarity songs.
Addressing the mammoth crowd at Kpor, headquarters of the area, Giadom explained that after evaluating the activities of PDP in recent times, it was clear that the party no longer protects the interest of Gokana people and its development.
He cited the abandonment of the Bodo-Bonny road and non-implementation of UNEP report on Ogoniland, among others under the PDP led government as sins against the people, insisting that, at this point in history the people desire a platform that would facilitate progress and true democracy.
“In 2011, we voted PDP, today, we have discovered that the party no longer protects our interest, so what shall we do? He asked; to which the people answered, we should leave PDP”.
Armed with a broom and APC flag, Giadom declared “Today, we, the good people of Gokana have collectively agreed to move from PDP to APC, no bi so una talk? Na so o!”
Buttressing the peoples’ decision, he said they were joining the progressives in order to offer good leadership and development, informing the crowd that “Our leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has moved to APC and wherever he goes, we will go with him, because of the love he has shown us”.
The mammoth crowd led by the Commissioner, Victor Giadom, Assembly member, Innocent Barikor and Council Chairman, Ledee Demua later inaugurated the APC Secretariat in the area.
