Olympic Gold Medallist Eyes Sports Job
An Olympian, Enefiok
Udo-Obong, has said that he was aspiring to become the country’s Minister of Sports or to head the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), in the near future.
Udo-Obong told newsmen in Lagos that he believed he possessed the managerial competence to advance the country’s sport to its pinnacle.
The Sydney 2000 Olympics 4x400m gold medallist said that there was no point restructuring the system in place, as the current administrators were on the right track.
“I’m nursing an ambition to become the minister of sports someday or becoming the president of the federation; that’s where my ambitions are.
“And I believe I could serve the country better in those capacities because I am more administratively inclined.
“Right now, we shouldn’t worry about anything, we’re on the right track and I feel Nigerian athletics has a bright future,” Udo-Obong said.
He commended the organisers of the recent Nigerian Sports Awards for the recognition given to Blessing Okagbare whom, he said, had projected the country’s image immensely, with her talent.
“It’s important to recognise Okagbare. She came from a system and there are many others like her. We are fortunate that we are reaping the fruits of her success,” he said.
Udo-Obong expressed the hope that by the next Olympics, Nigerians would see another generation of athletes that would rise to the level Okagbare had attained.
