The Nigeria Deposit In
surance Corporation (NDIC) has advised banks to adopt friendly lending policies to engender sustainable national banking culture.
The Special Assistant to the Chief Executive of NDIC, Mr Yakubu Mohammed, made the appeal in a paper he delivered at an on-going workshop for financial journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
Mohammed said that there was need for banks to always evaluate their investment implications on the environment.
He said that environmental impact assessment on investments was a new concept developed by the Bankers Committee.
According to him, the voluntary new investment concept does not attract any penalty.
The NDIC official, challenged commercial banks to go beyond profits making and consider the wellbeing of Nigerians and the economy.
He said that banks should also engage in capacity building as a long term measure in growing businesses and sustainable banking practices.
