The Onye-Ishi Etche and Ochie of Etcheland, His Royal Eminence, Eze Emmanuel N.B. Opurum has challenged young school leavers in Rivers State to utilise opportunities offered by agricultural policies of federal and Rivers State governments to become professional farmers.

Eze Opurum made the call recently at Okehi, headquarters of Etche Local Government Area, during the finale of this year’s Etche new yam festival.

He explained that government’s agricultural policy would enable the young farmers to transform from the primitive and conservative system to a more dynamic, progressive and modern farming system.

According to the monarch, the green revolution and other agricultural policies of government had already become part of family planning system in the country.

Eze Opurum however insisted that our land tenure system should reflect farming based on communal ownership with government’s heavy subsidy in order to make the programmes result-oriented.

In the same vein, he called for  network of roads in Etche and Omuma local government areas so as to provide avenues to market the agricultural products.

He used the opportunity to appeal to young farmers to form co-operative societies in order to benefit from government’s agricultural programmes.
