President Goodluck Jonathan is confident in the ability of the current crop of players in the Super Eagles to spring a surprise by winning the 2014 World Cup.

Speaking with newsmen in France, the President recalled Nigeria’s unexpected victory at the Olympic Games in Altanta ’96, and also cited the nation’s success in the age grade competitions as evidence of Nigeria’s rating as a major footballing nation.

“We have won the Olympic gold in soccer before, we have won Under-17 thrice (four times actually) and we have been doing quite well in the Under-20,” he boasted.

While restating his optimism on a successful outing this time around, the president lamented the ill-luck that has prevented Nigeria or any other African country from winning the World Cup.

Commenting on Nigeria’s group, the President identified Argentina as a major force, but insisted that Nigeria was also a power-house in their own right.
