Four Arraigned For Assaulting Policemen
Four men last Thursday
appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrate Court in Lagos, charged with assaulting police officers.
The accused are Adebanjo Awolesi, 30; Ayodeji Awolesi, 18; who reside at 39, Itunoloja St., Isiwu and Jaiyeola Shotuyi, 68.
Others are Olusegun Shotuyi, 45, who resides at 27, Ayegbami St., Isiwu in Ikorodu, near Lagos.
They are facing a five-count charge of breach of peace, obstruction, assault, battery and malicious damage before the court.
According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Iyabo Johnson, the accused battered Insp. Rufus Ojuko and his team while they were executing their lawful duties.
“The police received a distress call that some groups of men were rioting in Isiwu, Ikorodu, when they got there, the accused mobilised about 200 men who attacked the police.
“They assaulted the policemen and maliciously damaged the windscreen of a police Toyota Hilux patrol van, two rear lights and side mirror, all valued at N70,000.
“They inflicted injury on the hand of Insp. Rufus Ojuko with the aid of a machete,” Johnson said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 166, 171, 172 (a & b), 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in like sum.
One of the sureties must live and work in Ikorodu.
The Magistrate, Mr B.A. Sonuga, adjourned the case to December19 for mention.
