Body Set To Popularise Rugby
The Co-ordinator of the
Lagos Rugby Grassroots Development Initiative (LRGDI), Tubosun Johnson, has said the body would not relent in its drive to popularise the sport in the country.
Johnson told newsmen in Lagos that the LRGDI intended to introduce the sport to different schools as part of its development programmes for 2014.
He said the Nigerian sports public was yet to accept rugby as a major competitive sport in the state because of lack of awareness on the sport’s derivable benefits.
“Rugby is an interesting sport which requires one running around the field from one end to the other and therefore requires great stamina for it.
“As part of the plans to increase its popularity in 2014, we intend to introduce the sport to many schools by organising school sports competitions,” the co-ordinator said.
Johnson added that the only risk in rugby involved players colliding with themselves, and sometimes wrestling themselves to the ground in order to get the ball from their opponents.
He, however, explained that the sport’s injuries were most times at its minimal, because the players underwent rigorous training exercises and were taught on how to break a fall.
