ASUU Strike: Union Hails Peace Moves
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has lauded the Federal Government for reaching an agreement with ASUU to motivate the striking lecturers to return to their classrooms.
The General Secretary of NUEE told our correspondent that, “It is only through dialogue that the matter can be resolved.’’
“Thr eat of sack of the lecturers was only to aggravate the issue.
“The parties have sat down and reach “a conclusion on how the educational sector can be improved upon,” he said.
According to him, ASUU should be commended for trying to ensure that the quality of the country’s education is raised.
He said that it was a common knowledge that the standard of our education had dropped over the years.
“This is the only country I have seen that lecturers will be asking the government to equip its schools, it should be a concern that should interest the government and every one of us as it will help to better the nation,’’ he said.
The union general secretary urged the government to ensure that it paid the salaries of the lecturers while they were on strike.
“The lecturers will still have to complete their curriculum before any student graduates,’’ he said.
Ajero said that he believed that President Goodluck Jonathan personally handled the matter, thereby achieving a lot for the strike to be called off.
It would be recalled that ASUU had embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike on July 1 over claims that the Federal Government had failed to implement parts of agreement it signed in 2009.
