Amaechi: Ikanya, Giadom, Ngeregbara Hail Defection
As reactions continue to
trail the defection of Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and four other governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the former Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties in Rivers State, Chief Davies Ikanya, says the state governor’s move is a right step in the right direction, assuring that the coast is now clear for the APC to rule the state in 2015.
Chief Ikanya, who is presently the leader of APC in Rivers State told The Tide in Port Harcourt last Tuesday, that the Governor’s bold step into APC marks the beginning of the party ruling the state.
He stated that Governor Amaechi’s defection to APC was borne out of his sincere desire and determination to protect the interest of the people of Rivers State as well as prevent the imposition of candidates on the electorate.
The former CNPP Chairman predicted a landslide victory for APC in the state and in the entire country during the 2015 polls.
Similarly, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Chief Victor Giadom, yesterday in Gokana Local Government Area, said the governor’s defection to APC was formally endorsed by the majority of Rivers people.
According to him, “all the 23 local government chairmen of the state, 26 members of the state Assembly, all members of House of Representatives and two out of the three senators representing the state in the Senate supported and gave their mandate to Governor Amaechi to decide the right party to replace PDP in the state in the 2015 polls.
Giadom, who also announced his formal defection into APC at Kpor, the headquarters of Gokana Local Government Area, said Governor Amaechi’s defection to APC had heralded the beginning of the failure of PDP in Rivers State and Nigeria.
In his reaction, a one-time Commissioner for Works in Rivers State, Engr Sampson Ngerebara, said there was nothing wrong for the governor of Rivers State to change party, if he feels uncomfortable in the party.
He argued that the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria gives anyone the right to join any political party of his or her choice.
Ngeregbara declined comment on the right political party for the state.
