The Grassroots Democratic Initiative (GDI), a political organisation being sponsored by the Supervising Minister of Education, Hon. Nyesom Wike has been condemned for allegedly threatening to make Rivers State unhospitable for non-indigenes in 2015.
The Rivers state Co-ordinator of Youth Alliance on Constitutional review and Electoral Reform (YACORE), Godpower Igwe in a statement issued in Port Harcourt alleged that the GDI made the threat during the inauguration of the Local Government Chapter executive at Eleme yesterday.
Igwe who is also a Special Adviser to the National President of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) expressed dismay over the unfortunate statement credited to GDI and urged Nigerians to resist such threats of impunity.
According to him, “the statement that tenants, Igbo, Yorubas, Hausas, foreign and others will not have their way in Rivers state come 2015 when GDI takes over power from government under Rotimi Amaechi is questionable, suspicious, unlawful and hence derisive. It is an open display of impunity. Rivers people are tenants too somewhere. Rivers people and Nigerians living and doing businesses in Rivers state must not allow this threat by GDI to see the light of the day.
“This is not and must not be the reason why we must vote our son, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as President come 2015 as GDI boasts and the latter should stop bringing in the name of Mr. President if statements like the one made in Eleme yesterday is to be made at a public function as it is capable of slimming our South-South mandate which is visible in President Goodluck Ebele Goodluck at the moment”, he said.
The YACORE Co-Ordinator recalled that Sergent Awuse, a senior member of GDI made a similar statement during his governorship campaign some years ago in Port Harcourt and urged all well-meaning Nigerians to disregeard such comment.
“Let me not think nor infer that they want all owners of numerous businesses in Port Harcourt whose majority constitute tenants to vacate Rivers State when they (GDI) take over power from Amaechi in 2015.
“I think Governor Amaechi and President Jonathan will always want the peaceful co-existence of Nigerians wherever they are staying irrespective of state of origin which is a serious constitutional issue”, he added.
