Women Group Seeks Stringent Laws On Divorce
A non-governmental
organisation based in Port Harcourt, Women For Better Society has called for more stringent laws on divorce.
The Group Leader, Mrs. Felicia George, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend, called on the legislature to make laws that would make divorce cumbersome.
Mrs. George remarked that the present laws on divorce were not working.
She noted that the laws had not been able to prevent divorce as there were many divorce cases pending in courts.
The leader pointed out that children were worse-hit in divorce matters as they were not allowed to grow normally.
She said it was unfortunate that homes were continually broken and the interest of children thrown overboard.
Mrs. George attributed the rise in crime to problems emanating from the home.
According to her, “the home no longer offered its protective shield to the children, the result is that children from broken homes roam the streets and unleash mayhem on the society”.
“Everybody is a victim of the menace either in the long or short run. That is why we must work concertedly to ensure we rid the society of the cankerworm”, she stated.
She also pointed out that Christians were obligated to protect their marriages as she noted that God himself hated divorce.
She urged all to work concertedly in the efforts to reduce the incidence of divorce in our society.
“We cannot rest on our oars until the society is free of the illwind of divorce which does nobody any good”, she stated.
Mrs. George called on Christian leaders to rise up to the challenges that stare them in the face.
