Union Gives Ebonyi 7-Day Ultimatum
The Joint Action Commit
tee of Trade Union of Nigeria (JACTUN), Ebonyi College of Education chapter, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to address its welfare problems.
The state president of the union, Mr Greg Esheye, made this known when he briefed newsmen at the end of the union’s emergency congress in Ikwo recently.
Esheye said the issues in contention were refusal by school authority to revert to old tax regime, non constitution of governing council and non-payment of pension and gratuity to staff.
He said that at the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum, the union would mobilise for a three-day warning strike.
The president said the ultimatum was sequel to management and government’s refusal and reluctance to address the union’s grievances.
He said the union was committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of its members, adding that every available legal means would be explored to achieve this.
Esheye urged the government and the school authority to act fast to avert the looming strike.
He further called on well meaning individuals and stakeholders to prevail on them to meet the union’s demands in order to avoid disruption of the school’s calendar.
“We strongly believe in the power of negotiation as we are not enthusiastic in calling for strike.
“We avail ourselves to any move that can lead to amicable resolution of the impasse,’’ he said.
