Okposi Community Holds Wrestling Contest, Today

A wrestling contest to
mark the climax of the 2013 annual New Yam Festival in Okposi community of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State holds today.
The Head, Okposi Community Wrestlers’ Praise Singers Group, Mr Michael Okorogba made this known in Okposi, during an interview with The Tide.
He said that the wrestling contest is expected  to attract participants across the 12 communities of Igburu clan and beyond who will lock horns with indigenous wrestlers of Okposi community, pointing out that the host was noted for a high level of hospitality in the area.
Mr Okorogba who spoke through Mr Azikiwe Bathwell also said that female wrestling contest would be held on Saturday morning pointing out that the contest would be between visiting female wrestlers and female wrestlers of Okposi community.
He explained that the festival which usually attracts visitors and tourists from all walks of life treats sports lovers to full satisfaction.
Bathwell further said that the festival was usually rounded off with a football match between visitors and Okposi community  team.
According to Okorogba, members of the Okposi Community Wrestlers Praise Singers Group were scheduled to hold a night vigil last night, where the group would also pay glowing tribute to famous wrestlers by visiting their homes.
In keeping with the culture and tradition, he added that guests were expected to stay indoors with their hosts while thePraise Singers would move round the community displaying with talking drums, small wooden gongs and maracas.
Okorogba who is the custodian of the wrestling drums for the community disclosed that the festival had remained a peaceful and unifying factor  from time immemorial.
