Governor Peter Obi of
Anambra State has released an additional N10 million for the rehabilitation of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha.
The school has so far received N32 million from the state government for rehabilitation of its facilities.
Obi, while presenting the N10 million cheque to Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, commended the mission for judicious use of fund released to its schools.
“We are making education a top priority in the state; as a government, we attach importance to the proper up-bringing of our children.
“This would create enabling environment for them to compete favourably with other students in and outside the country.
“We also want the principals and lecturers to complement government’s efforts through inculcating on the students the habit of hard work and discipline,’’ he said.
Earlier, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Francoise Marie-Nelly, announced that the bank had selected the school for its special education intervention in Anambra.
Marie-Nelly, however, urged the students to be outstanding in their academic performance, adding: “This is the time for you to roll-up your sleeves and make your future by studying hard.’’
She said that the World Bank would improve the school technical capacity on teaching and bring in more learning aids and textbooks to further equip the institution.
“We in the World Bank commend Anambra Government for its stride in education and we are here to complement the state government’s efforts,’’ the director said.
Responding, Bishop Nwokolo thanked the government for returning schools to the mission and making the church to be part of the business of remoulding the character of children in the state.
“We are grateful to the state government and the World Bank’s vision and burning desire to see that we turn out students that would be sound both in moral, character and learning,” he said.
The Principal of the school, Mr Robert Aralu, assured that the fund would be judiciously used.
