NSE Boss Wants Govt To Verify Developers’ Claims

quacks and curtail irregularities in the housing sector, the Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Port Harcourt branch, Dennis Deniah has urged those saddled with the responsibilities of government in the housing sector to always verify properly the documents and claims of developers.
He said that a lot of people have resorted to quackery and impersonation as a way of earnring their livelihood, adding that government agencies responsible for checking this must wake up to the challenges, especially in the housing sector.
Engineer Deniah, who made this known while responding to some issues in a housing forum in Port Harcourt , said that the engineering designs must be properly scrutinised especially for a public building.
He said that one method that government should adopt in giving out building contracts to avoid problem is to ensure that anyclient or project developer must be made to sign an undertaking for the supervision, and must be a qualified engineer in that respect .
The NSE boss also urged the “One Stop-Shop” committee of the ministry of urban development to be proactive and help the ministry in the vetting of plan approval.
He also urged the committee to find time to visit project sites to see that people are complying with the specification in respect to buildings.
Deniah also sited an incident that occurred in OJike Street in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, where the developer did not follow the specification given for the building.
He also pointed out that a lot of havoc had occurred on building due to non- compliance to given specification, but expressed hope that changes are taking place.
