The Secretary, Nigeria
Boxing Federation (NBF), Tunde Laguda, has said that this year’s Eagles Belt in December would be used to select boxers for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The NBF President, Maj.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, has promised to sponsor this year’s belt while speaking at the final of the National Open Boxing championship held last August in Lagos.
Laguda told newsmen in Lagos that the bouts would assist the federation to sieve the best male and female boxers for the Games.
According to him, the belt would feature top-class boxers out of which the best would be selected for the 10 male and female events in Glasgow.
“We are making efforts to stage an event that will be better than the August National Open championship.
“This event is premised on the Glasgow Games, which to all intent and purposes is a big event; we have made appreciable marks in the sports, in the past,” Laguda said.
He, however, added that some boxers who were currently at the World Boxing championship, strictly for males in Kazakhstan, would have the privilege of first consideration.
According to him, Nigeria would strive to feature in all the 10 events Glasgow.
“The Eagle Belt is a championship for the current best in all the 10 classes in boxing. We are gunning for the very best,” he added.
