Professional bodies in Nigeria have been advised to raise their standards through well structured peer group mechanisms for healthy competition among members.
The Supervising Minister of Lands Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Musa Sada, gave the advice yesterday in Abuja at the 3rd annual professionals’ conference of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN).
The minister said that platforms such as the conference would enable member bodies to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
“ It will discourage traditional professional prejudice, intolerance and self –centredness, ” said, Sada, who was represented by Malam Sani Gidado, Director, Architectural Services of the ministry.
He called on the APBN to make the necessary positive impact to push the Nigerian economy forward, and advised members to come up with plans that would guide them to contribute more effectively to national development.
APBN President, Bawa Kaoje said the objective of the conference was to promote and enhance the status of professional bodies in Nigeria.
He said the conference would create avenues for the bodies to offer advice and render assistance to government when necessary.
In his speech, the Chairman of the APBN, Prof. Ade Wahab, outlined major challenges to be tackled in the ABPN to enhance national development.
He said they include “having passion to eradicate corruption and apathy, doing the right thing even when it is hard, and showing commitment to ideas”.
