A Port Harcourt based
lawyer and human rights advocate, Barrister Jackson Assor has said that the rise in the incidence of rape in the country is indicative of the erosion of our moral values.
Barr. Assor, who stated this while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt at the weekend, noted that adolescents and young persons were engaging in the acts of rape.
The legal practitioner blamed the society for being careless with pornographic films and seductive outfits.
He said that the festering moral decadence was a mirror of what the society had become in recent times.
Barr. Assor remarked that “there must be a deliberate effort by our government to inculcate the moral values of people to the children”.
According to him, “globalisation of culture has been a disservice to the negriod race, which the Caucasian culture has been a superstructure which every other must align itself to.”
“In the circumstance, we discover that we can hardly preserve any of our cultural predilection”, the lawyer stated.
He pointed out that unless there was a concerted by all and sundry to stop the menace, the society would be worse for it.
He advised state counsels who prosecute rape cases to be serious so that the crime could be checked.
Barr. Assor also noted that there must be collective effort by all well-meaning members of the society to check the ugly trend.
He described rape as a heinous against God, man and the society at large and warned that perpetrators of evil would never go scot free.
The legal practitioner also stated that human rights lawyer, women lawyers and a plethora of other well-meaning members of the society were united in the fight against the crime of rape.
