First military governor of old Rivers State and Amanyanabo of Twon Brass, King Alfred Diete- Spiff has expressed concern over the lip service paid to gas flaring in the Niger Delta region by respective governments and oil prospecting companies.
He has therefore challenged entrepreneurs and the organised private sector to take advantage of the opportunities available in the economic utilization of the flared gas to end the danger posed by gas faring sites.
Diete-Spiff made the call last Friday at the opening of the 9th Port Harcourt International Trade Fair, organised by the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (PHCCIMA), in Port Harcourt.
According to the monarch, setting up a refinery that would utilise the flared gas would cost about N5 million which he believed, many interested entrepreneurs could afford.
He however called on businessmen, companies and professionals to leverage on the professional advice, information and other advantages inherent in the business Chamber by affiliating with the city chamber closest to them.
Earlier, President of PHCCIMA, Engr. Emeka Unachukwu had identified trade as the key driver for economic growth and the realization of the nation’s Vision 2020 project.
He said the Port Harcourt Trade Fair has been a major catalyst in the development of domestic and international trade as well as fostering international trade relations.
Unachukwu said PHCCIMA was committed to tackling problems facing entreprenures which included access to finance, access roads, power, crime, trade and labour relations as well as tax rates and administration. This year’s trade fair, Unachukwu said was enjoying the partnership of PMAN in Rivers State while the Rex Lawson Concert would be inaugurated to immortalise the legendary music icon.
Others who spoke at the event were the National President of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, industry, Mines and Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State represented by the State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Chuma Chinye and two past Presidents of PHCCIMA, Mr. Godfrey Ohuabunwa and Elder Hyke Ochia.
