Governor Sullivan Chime
of Enugu State has urged Christian pilgrims from the state to be good ambassadors during their stay in the Holy Land.
Speaking at a one-day sensitisation workshop for the more than 300 potential pilgrims, Chime said their attitude would encourage government’s continued sponsorship of the exercise.
The governor, who was represented by Mr Eze O. Eze, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, said his administration’s sponsorship of the exercise was to put God first in all endeavours.
“You should count yourselves lucky to have been chosen for this year’s pilgrimage as you will be the first set to be transported from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
“Some of you think that this exercise is the extension of their business trip or a veritable avenue for escape, but l hope you are all very responsible people who will not disappoint the state.
“Adhere strictly to the instructions given to you by your tour guide and bus leaders so that by the time you come back, the government will be encouraged to sponsor others,’’ he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of Enugu State Christian Pilgrims’ Welfare Board, Rev. Fr. John Nwafor, said the workshop was to enlighten the potential pilgrims on what was expected of them.
He tasked the pilgrims to ensure that the primary intention of the exercise which was for spiritual transformation remained their guiding principle in the course of the pilgrimage.
Rev. Fr. Longinus Ugonwa, who spoke on the theme of the workshop: “Pilgrimage: A Tool for Moral and Spiritual Transformation,’’ charged the pilgrims to be agents of change on their return.
