Amaechi Dedicates Best Education Award To Rivers People

The rites of passage for late former Speaker of
the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry, dominated most parts of last week. Governor Chibuike Amaechi defied November 9, stormy weather and flew in from Lagos to attend the last segment at Obuama Town, the deceased final resting place.
On Monday, the Supreme Court put paid to speculations over attempt by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in 2011 election, Sir Celestine Omehia to be a joinder on a matter appealed by Governor Amaechi  on his tenureship.
Amaechi had through his lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, insisted that the appellate court was wrong to have joined Omehia as a party, arguing that the governor’s application for joinder was not properly filed.
Fagbemi addressing the Supreme Court on Monday maintained that Omehia’s application before the court of Appeal did not comply with the law.
The Supreme Court later fixed the matter for February, 2014 for ruling.  The new PDP hailed the Supreme Court’s decision and urged for support for Governor Amaechi.
On Wednesday, Governor Amaechi was awarded Business Day Best Governor for Education Development in the country.  Amaechi beat other state governors including Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Edo, Gombe, Oyo, Kano, Osun and Ogun states.
The award ceremony was held at Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.  Governor Amaechi, shortly after receiving the award, dedicated it to Rivers people and to Nigerians.
Governor Amaechi returned to the state on Thursday and presided over the monthly inter-governmental forum, where state policies and programmes were reviewed.
Shortly after the meeting on Thursday, the Rivers State Government through the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr George Feyii, announced the decision of government to declare a two-day holiday to allow civil servants participate in the ongoing centenary celebrations of Port Harcourt City.
A statement from the SSG’s office declared November 15th and 18th work-free days for all public servants and employees of the state government.
On Friday, top government functionaries attended the Miss Centenary Beauty Pageant at Hotel Presidential,  Port Harcourt.  The Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru and his wife,  Mr George Feyii and members of the state executive council were among those that graced the show.
The Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, led other governors to a two-day retreat in Sokoto State.  The retreat, according to NGF’s Director-General, will discuss important national issues.
