Abe Supports 40 Law School Students
The Senator representing
Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe has decried the falling standard of education in Nigeria, describing the development as worrisome.
Sen. Abe stated this in Port Harcourt, while presenting cheques to 40 students of the Nigeria Law School, from the seven local government areas that make up the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, marking the second edition of the scheme.
“If you want to see the future of any country, look at the level of investment in education and police. Recently, the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps expressed shock that more than 70% of Corps members cannot fill NYSC forms. If you use that as a yardstick, you will be concerned about what is happening in Nigeria.” He said.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Abe said; “If you look at Nigeria today, the education sector has nothing to offer. Most prosperous people did not get there through education. They got there either by ‘man-know-man’ or other means.”
“We must be concerned about the quality and future of education in Nigeria. Our future depends on that. I will continue to identify with Governor Amaechi, because, what he has put on ground for education will raise Rivers State. He is investing in ICT, he is investing in teachers, and he is investing in infrastructure, to raise the standard of education in Rivers State.”
In his remarks, the facilitator, Rivers South East Senatorial Youth and Students Desk, Kadilo Kabari lauded Senator Abe for instituting the annual law school support for students from the Senatorial district.
Kabari said; “One thing about Senator Magnus Abe and his support to the people of the senatorial district is that they are all geared towards education. What we have in the South-East senatorial district is a conscious effort to build the youth and make education available to all.”
Also speaking, former Chairman, Rivers State Youths Council, Comrade Bethel Oko-Jaja thanked the senator for the gesture, describing it as the first in the history of Rivers South-East senatorial district and the state in general.
Oko-Jaja said; “It is quiet commendable. It is the right step in the right direction. This is the first time in the history of Rivers State that a senator, representing a senatorial district will carry out this kind of laudable project. We want to commend him and ask God in His infinity mercy to bless him the more”.
“To the students, I will say it is an opportunity to go to the law school and do excellently well. What the senator has done is not part of his senatorial duties but as a human being, who trusts in education, he has done well for us.”
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Edmund Oodee thanked Senator Magnus Abe for the law school support and promised not to disappoint him and the people of Rivers South East senatorial district.
