Task Force Seeks 1,000 Soldiers To Recover Weapons

The National Task Force to Combat Illegal Importation and Smuggling of Goods, Arms, Ammunition and Light Weapons yesterday in Abuja volunteered to recover all illegal arms and ammunition in the country with the assistance of 1,000 military personnel and some operatives of the State Security Service.
The Director-General of NATFORCE, Dr. Osita Okereke, disclosed this during a press briefing to announce some administrative changes in the state formation of NATFORCE.
While lamenting the monitoring of the country’s porous borders, he said illegal arms and ammunition had found their way into the country as a result of poorly motivated and trained security personnel deployed to man the entry points into the country.
According to him, insecurity thrives in Nigeria presently because the various security agencies have lost focus on how to go about securing lives and property which is their core responsibility.
He said, “I have suggested on several occasions that if the President can give this special task force just 1,000 soldiers and some State Security Service personnel, we will recover all the illegal arms and ammunition in this country.
“One of the reasons why the nation is grappling with security threats is because the borders are so porous. In most cases you see one unpatriotic custom officer posted at the border point, when he gets information that arms are coming in, he looks the other way because he must have been compromised.”
