Stakeholders Laud Jonathan Over National Conference
Stakeholders in
Anambra State have applauded President Goodluck Jonathan for setting up an Advisory Committee to establish the modalities for a national dialogue.
The traditional ruler of Awka, Gibson Nwosu, commended Jonathan for summoning courage in yielding to the demands of the people.
“The President should be commended for the courage to respond to the clarion call for a national conference. “It is a very good development, because there is need to ensure that every segment of the nation is represented as it will assist in eliminating areas of friction if the resolutions are fully implemented. “I have no doubt that the National Council of Traditional Rulers will meet and make their contributions known,’’ Nwosu said.
He also appealed to stakeholders in the country to co-operate with the committee in ensuring that the planned conference came to fruition.
In his reaction, Emeka Nwogbo, representing Awka North/South Federal Constituency of the state, said the conference would give Nigerians the opportunity to talk over some burning issues.
“I endorse the National Conference because it will give Nigerians the opportunity to discuss some burning issues which have continued to bother us as a people. “The fact remains that the problem is not a National Conference but on the implementation of the resolutions of that conference.
“One also wonders who will constitute the membership of the conference when there are existing members of the National Assembly elected by the people. “A National Conference or dialogue is alright, but I will not support National Sovereign Conference which can break the country,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Joe-Martins Uzodike, the state Commissioner for Information, described President Jonathan’s action as “a welcome development,’’ adding that the conference will enable Nigerians to handle some disturbing issues.’’
Uzodike advised Nigerians not to allow the conference to lead to agitation for a National Sovereign Conference.
“We should rather use it to proffer solutions to the many challenges facing the country,’’ he said.
