Speaker of the Rivers State
House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amachree, has lamented the death of his predecessor, Rt Hon. Tonye Ezekiel Harry.
In a statement signed by his press secretary, Udede Jim-Opiki, Rt Hon Amachree, expressed deep shock and sadness over the sudden death of Harry.
While describing the late former Speaker as an astute legislator, Amachree noted that Harry was one of his pillars of support in the 7th Assembly, saying that “Rivers State has lost one of its most experienced legislators”.
Speaking on behalf of  members of the State Assembly, the Speaker prayed God to give the state, family of the deceased and the Kalabari ethnic nationality the fortitude to bear the loss.
Harry, until his death last Friday, was the member representing Degema Constituency in the State Assembly since 1999.
He was the Deputy Speaker of the State Legislature while Governor Chibuike Amaechi was the Speaker for the eight years of Dr Peter Odili’s administration.
He then took over from Amaechi as Speaker for the first four years of the Amaechi administration.
The late former Speaker was said to have collapsed in his private gymnasium while exercising last Wednesday. He was said to have been promptly taken to a private clinic for resuscitation.
The Tide gathered  that when Governor Amaechi got wind of the development, he immediately went to Harry in the hospital and directed the Commissioner for Health Dr Sampson Parker, to make urgent arrangement for the former Speaker to be flown abroad for further treatment.
Sources close to the deceased said he eventually suffered a heart attack on board a France bound plane, which had to make an emergency landing in Algeria last Thursday where the lawmaker died.
