Governor Rochas Okorocha of
Imo has called on the international community, particularly the U.S. and Britain, to facilitate Nigeria’s permanent membership of the U.N. Security Council.
Okorocha made the call in a statement from his media aide, Mr William Unadike, in Owerri recently.
He said the move was to appreciate Nigeria’s contributions to the maintenance of peace and security in the world.
He noted that the country’s military was at various times deployed as peace keepers in former Yugoslavia, Angola, Rwanda, Lebanon, Somalia and Sudan.
According to the governor, Nigeria deserves to be appointed a permanent member of the Security Council in view of its significant role in global politics.
He expressed satisfaction with the recent emergence of the country as a member of the council.
He said the news of the country’s success did not come to him as a surprise because of its contributions to world peace and security.
Okorocha said the country did not fold its arms rather made contributions that brought colonialism to an end in various African countries like Angola, Namibia, and South Africa.
He said that Nigeria remained a strong force in the regional ECOWAS/ECOMOG which intervened in resolving and stabilising war-ravaged Liberia and Sierra Leone.
He called on Nigerians who travelled abroad to be good ambassadors of the country to correct the wrong impressions foreigners had of the country.
