As the rainy season peaks,
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised teachers and parents to warn children against playing in streams, drains and rivers to avoid drowning.
In a statement in Lagos last Tuesday,  NEMA Information Officer, South-West Zone, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said states in the zone were experiencing excessive rainfall and as such it was dangerous for children to play in streams and rivers.
It said “NEMA has been monitoring continuous rainfall in the last 24 hours and praises the effort of state governments and stakeholders over the management of the predicted rainfall.”
The statement said that as the new academic session began, school children might decide to play in dangerous streams after school hours.
It urged guardians and teachers to seriously warn their children against such act.
The agency also advised teachers to delay school children for longer periods in school whenever they observed that rainfall could be hazardous to them.
“Pupils should not be released until it is quite safe for them to find their way home, “ the statement said.
It advised Nigerians to be alert to the intensive rainfall and not to hesitate to alert rescue officials if the situation was beyond their abilities.
