President Goodluck Jonathan says the outcome of the planned national dialogue will be forwarded to the National Assembly to aid the constitution amendment process.
Jonathan stated this in Abuja yesterday when he received members of the Muslim community who paid him Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa.
According to him, the convocation of a national dialogue is coming at a critical time when the National Assembly is thinking about amending the constitution.
The President urged politicians to stop utterances that incite and instigate hate in the hearts of children, saying the dialogue process must lead Nigerians to talk with a direction and not dissension.
Earlier, Vice-President Namadi Sambo thanked the President for his guidance and leadership role in ensuring political stability in the country.
He also thanked him for the planned convocation of the national dialogue which he said, would unite and move the nation forward.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan said that the proposed national dialogue “is not diversionary or aimed at promoting certain political ambitions”.
He reiterated that the dialogue was aimed at promoting and enhancing national peace, stability and progress.
“It is in keeping with that avowed commitment and my firm belief in the right to freedom of expression and the right of all people in a democracy to make choices on how they wish to live and be governed that I recently announced plans for an orderly national conversation on our problems and challenges.
“It will also help to reinforce the ties that bind the country’s many ethnic nationalities and ensure that Nigeria’s immense diversity continues to be a source of strength and greatness,” Jonathan said.
