An aspirant to the
chairmanship of Awgu local government in Enugu State has dragged the chairman of the council to court to stop him from contesting the November 2 council elections.
Mr Amobi Udeh, who aspired on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the recent primaries, asked the Federal High Court in Enugu to stop the incumbent chairman from contesting again on the grounds of age.
The counsel to the plaintiff, Mr Tagbo Ike, told the court that the chairman was born on June 13, 1985 and did not qualify to contest the chairmanship.
He said the party’s guideline stipulated that one must be 30 years or above before vying for the position of local government chairman and prayed the court to stop the chairman from parading himself as the candidate of the party as he was not qualified.
Ike reminded the court that the last day for the substitution of candidates was October 16 and prayed it to give the case accelerated hearing.
He said his client purchased the expression of interest and nomination forms and had evidence of his payments which he tendered as exhibits in the court.
Meanwhile, the counsel to the defendant was absent in the court.
Justice Dorathy Agishi adjourned the case to October 21 for ruling.
