Irate Youths Disrupt Medical Services In Ebonyi
A group of youths from
Ohatekwe village in the Isieke community of Ebonyi disrupted medical services at the Mile 4 Missionary Hospital in the area recently.
The youths, numbering about 30, barricaded the hospital’s entrance and prevented patients from entering.
They also forced the hospital authorities to discharge admitted patients. The situation caused pandemonium at the hospital as those who had patients there were seen taking away their sick relatives and pregnant women.
The leader of the youths, Chibueze Egwu, told newsmen that they took the action due to the failure of the hospital’s authorities to abide by agreement.
He said the hospital had an agreement over developmental issues with the community, which is located in the Ebonyi Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The hospital’s Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Mrs Mercy Ozoenyi, said the youths of the community did not accept any incentive given to them by the hospital.
The traditional ruler of the community, Mr Emmanuel Ajigbo, promised to do all within his powers to quickly resolve the issue.
The land on which the hospital was built was given to the Catholic Church missionaries in 1947.
However, DSP Sylvester Igbo, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebonyi Command, said the matter had not been officially reported to the command.
“I will, however, call the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area to ascertain the true situation on ground,” he said.
