The Nigerian Election Debates
Group (NEDG), a non-partisan and independent organisation, has scheduled political debates for governorship candidates and their deputies ahead of the November 16 election in Anambra State.
Chairman of the organisation, told Aremo Taiwo Alimi, newsmen in Awka on Thursday, that the debates would hold between October 22 and October 31.
Alimi said the debate was aimed at educating the electorate on issues concerning the elections.
“Debates are critical components of democratic process and culture aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
“The governorship candidates are expected to speak on areas relevant to the development of the state and the sustenance of democracy in Anambra,’’ he said.
The chairman said that the first and second sessions of the debates would hold for two hours each.
According to him, the candidates must be those approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the November 16 election.
Alimi said that a team from the National Coalition of Media and Civil Society Organisations would determine the best candidate of the debate.
He made it clear that the organisation does not collect money from the candidates or political parties so as to to avoid being influenced during the selection of the best candidate.
