A former Minister of In
formation, Prof. Jerry Gana, has assured PHCN workers of full payment of their entitlement as the Federal Government hands over the sector to private hands.
Addressing newsmen at the formal inauguration of 434 Megawatts Geregu II NIPP Power Station in Ajaokuta last Thursday, Gana appealed to the workers not to frustrate the privatisation efforts.
He urged the workers, under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria, not to disrupt the handing over process, but cooperate with the private investors.
“I am appealing to the PHCN workers to cooperate with the Federal Government in the handing over processes.
”I assure them that all their entitlements will be paid; they should join hands to make the revolution in the power sector total,” he said.
Gana said that the inauguration of the Geregu plant marked the beginning of the commissioning of nine others in the series.
He said that others would be inaugurated between now and middle of next year, adding that with this inauguration, power supply in Abuja would improve significantly.
Gana assured Nigerians that the power supply would stabilise and improve to provide the necessary platform for transformation of the economy as ‘transformation cannot take place without power supply.’
He said that with the inauguration of the remaining nine, additional 2000 megawatts would be added to the grid which would translate to an improvement in power supply in the country.
Gana congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration for the sustained efforts in the power sector adding, “we are beginning to see the fruits of their labour.’
He called for patience on the part of Nigerians to enable the government to succeed in its renewed efforts to improve power supply in the country.
