CLO Cautions Students On Partisan Politics

Organisation (CLO) in Rivers State has charged the leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) o redirect their energy towards the protection of the rights of its members instead of engaging in partisan politics.
The Chairman of the organisation in the State, Prince Sotonye George who said this during the inauguration of the new executive of the union last Wednesday in Port Harcourt, said that NURSS must be ready to stand for truth and justice at all times.
He noted that past leaders of the union failed to protect students rights in the campuses across the country and charged the new executive to see its mission as the protection of the rights of Rivers students, irrespective of institutions.
According to him, the Civil Liberties organisation (CLO) is ready to partner with them in the crusade against injustices in campuses.
In his address, the outgone President of the union, Comrade Warmate Awoloye listed some achievements of the outgone executive to include, the organisation of workshops, conventions and public enlightenment programmes for students.
Some of these programmes he said include seminar against Lassa Fever, special sanitation exercise as well as a peace summit, adding that the executive was proud to be associated with their numerous developmental programmes.
In his speech, the new President, Comrade Masi Chukwuladi Lucky said his administration will be open and inclusive.
Lucky said that his executive will not only protect students rights, but effort will be made to ensure that whatever is due to students is given to them. He called for un upward review of bursary to students and commended the students for the confidence reposed on him.
Speaking with newsmen, the Public Relations Officer of Civil Liberties Organisation Mr. Livingstone Wechie called on the Federal Government to implement its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
