Anambra Urges More Women Participation In Politics
Anambra State Govern
ment has called on women in the state to participate actively in politics and help to decide who will be the next governor in the gubernatorial election slated for Nov. 16
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Henrietta Agbata, said in Awka last Thursday that the government intended to reach out to women to encourage them to participate actively in politics.
Agbata said that the ministry would use women who were president generals of their towns’ women’s meeting to achieve the goals of reaching out to the women in various communities and groups.
She said that the government saw the importance for women to actively participate in choosing the next governor of the state to enable them to have voice in the governance.
“It is an established fact that women are ‘movers and shakers’ of events, so, we have decided to engage our women thoroughly in politic devoid of rancour and bitterness.“We encourage women of diverse class to come out and participate in politics as that will make them to be in tune with happenings around them and possibly change their lives and that of their communities,’’ she said.
The commissioner said that the purpose of using president general of the 177 communities in the state was to enable them reach out to the educated, semi-educated and uneducated women in the state.
According to her, women in politics will bring changes in areas of economic empowerment, initiating programmes favourable to the development of women and extracting the great potentials deposited in them.
She said that the involvement of women in politics and their achievements so far had shown that women could no longer be thrown to the background in policy making and governance.
“Women are good and focused planners; we make the difference anywhere we find ourselves. “We have seen the great importance of women and we implore Anambra women to come out of their shells in this political time and take a decision that will change the state for better,’’ she said.
Agbata said that the present administration of Mr Peter Obi was determined to give women a voice in order to transform the polity.
