Security Lapses: APC Flays Police
The Enugu State chapter
of All Progressives Congress (APC), has condemned the refusal of the police command in the area to provide them security during the party’s just-concluded primary elections held last Thursday in Enugu ahead of the November 2nd, 2013 council polls in the state.
Speaking with newsmen at the end of the primaries, the state local government primary election committee chairman for APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, described the police action as unfair, and quite unfortunate.
Nwoye, disclosed that he : led other members of his committee to the state commissioner of police office, where they had gone to summit their official letter requesting for security during the primary elections,” but the personal assistant (PA) to the commissioner, refused to collect it from us.”
He said the CPS, Personal Assistant (PA) had bluntly told them that his boss, was unavailable and that he could not receive such letter, especially coming from an opposition party.
The committee chairman hinted that they had earlier received similar ill treatment at the Area command office where their request was also turned down by the officer in charge.
Nwoye, regretted that the police action was coming barely few days after some miscreants suspected to be PDP thugs lunched serious attack on the opposition party members at a hotel in Agbani, in Nkanu west council area, where they were holding a meeting.
Said Nwoye: “the attack on our members last Wednesday by the PDP thugs at Agbani, which left some of our members seriously injured was reported to the police and state security service (SSS), and up till now nothing has been done about it by the police.”
He, however, accused the police operatives in the state of taking sides in political matters, saying, “what the police action simply means is that they are PDP police, and not Nigerian police force established to protect all and sundry. It is now clear, that the police in Enugu state, is only for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) so, we are using this medium to call on the Inspector-General of Police IGP, to as a matter of urgency come to our aide, because APC members in the state are now endangered species.”
