RSG Plans Four Modern Hospitals
Rivers State Government has awarded contracts for the construction of four ultra-modern hospitals in the State.
The Chief Medical Director, Rivers State Health Management Board, Dr. Okere Iragunima disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Tide yesterday in Port Harcourt.
He said this was the first phase of the seven ultra-modern general hospitals in the seven zones across the state, stressing that the hospitals would be of similar standard as Kelsey Harrison Specialist Hospital along Emenike Street in the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt.
The four hospitals in the first phase where work has already begun are, Bori, Degema, Ahoada and Okehi general hospitals.
According to the Chief Medical Director, the second phase would include Isiokpo, Bonny and Okrika general hospitals.
Dr. Iragunima said the contractors were expected to complete the construction work, including equipment by 2014.
“We believe that by 2014, the hospitals would be ready for commissioning because the contractors have between one year and one and half years to deliver,”, he added.
He said the state government, after handling the primary health care, “a functional board of the Health Management Board took a tour of the hospitals in the state with the aim of finding the way of maximising secondary health services to the people”.
“They are still analysing the information and data collected during the tour by the board with a view of taking decision”, he said, adding that the present administration was determined to address the anomalies observed during the tour of the state hospitals.
Our correspondent, who visited Okehi General Hospital, last Monday, reports that massive construction work has commenced already.
On the value of the contracts, the Chief Medical Director said he did not have the details.
