Residents of Port Harcourt City and its environs have lauded the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker for the free medical tests.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to The Tide  correspondent said the programme gave people  who have not visited hospitals for a long time the opportunity to test their body condition.
Mrs Chiamaka Peter who benefitted from the free eye and blood pressure test said she had never gone for such test but because it was available credible and free, she gave it a chance and realised that she had visual problems.
“Honestly, I thank the ministry and I have come to know that I have a visual problem which the doctors said is at its initial stage and could be controlled without even the use of glasses”, said her.
Another beneficiary, Chief Christmas Peri noted that the programme is a wonderful one and urged the Ministry to be regular in providing such facilities to the people.
According to Chief Peri who hailed from Bayelsa State, “the well-to-do easily rush to the big hospitals because they have money to pay and at times go to foreign hospitals, but the poor man struggling to pay house rent and feed the children may not have time or money  for tests”.
He maintained that such a free test has helped him to know that he has high blood pressure adding that the advice from the doctors have helped him a great deal and pleaded with the Primary Health care Management Board which is directly in-charge to keep the programme on.
The Chairman of Abali branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), Chief Bethel Dappa  thanked the Rivers State Health Commissioner, Sampson Parker for initiating the programme and urged him to make it more regular.
