Nigerian League Players Owed N904m Since 2010
The Association of
Professional Footballers of Nigeria (APFON), has expressed concern over the money owed to players and coaches in the Globacom Premier League (GPL) and the Nigeria National League (NNL).
A statement signed by the Association’s General-Secretary, Austin Popo, and made available to newsmen in Lagos said not less than N904 million was owed players and coaches in the two league divisions since 2010.
It added that N254 million represented the decided cases before the Arbitration Panel of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), while N650 million was yet to be determined.
“APFON is worried by the plight facing footballers in the country, against the backdrop of the staggering amount of money owed the players and coaches in the NPFL and NNL since 2010 amonting to N904 million.
The statement added that the body was committed to the advancement of academic and professional careers of footballers in the country.
It said that plans were in place for the proposed Nigeria Professional Footballers’ Pension Scheme to take off in due course.
“APFON reiterates its commitment toward the advancement of academic and professional careers of footballers in Nigeria through periodic programmes.
“Under the professional footballers, further education and Vocational Training Scheme will be used to enhance their standard of living, especially in retirement.
According to the statement, clubs must ensure adequate welfare of their players and give them their entitlements as and when due to meet their domestic challenges and improve their level of productivity.
