Monarch Laments Destruction Of Crops
The Paramount Ruler of Odual community in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, HRH. Chief Temple Jamala, has said that farmers in Odual are yet to come to terms with the effect of last year’s flooding.
Jamala who spoke to our correspondent in a telephone interview on the plight of farmers said, “all the crops the farmers planted last year were destroyed.
According to the Odual monarch, The Rivers State Government did not come to their rescue as nothing was done to cushion the effect of the flood in Odual.
He said apart from the relief materials that was given to the farmers while they were camped in the Abua central during the flood, nothing else was given to them after the flood.
“Apart from the relief materials they gave to my people while we were at Abua at the camp, when we came back, they did not give us anything,” he said.
Continuing, the Olema Odual said, “the money they gave us was N2000 and the food they were bringing, I don’t think there was a person that got a quarter bag of rice,” he said.
He said they only returned to begin a new life even as he said the farmers were living by the grace of God.
He further explained that since the meteorological agencies were rife with impending flood reports by the day, the community was faced with the problem of making farming come back to life.
However, Chief Jamala said the recent visit to Odual Community by a team of evaluators has not brought any fruitful result even as he said: “if the flood gets to the level of last year, his people would move to Ahoada.”
He expressed the fear that the people have no food adding that the perceived crises in the state may stall efforts of the government in delivering democratic dividends to the people.
