Mailafia Advises Successor On Implementation Of Environment Policies
Mrs Hadiza Mailafia, the immediate past Minister of Environment, yesterday in Abuja advised her successor, Mr Darius Ishaku, to ensure effective implementation of the ministry’s policies and programmes.
Mailafia gave the advice while formally handing over to Ishaku, the Minister of State for Niger-Delta who is to oversee the Ministry of Environment.
She said the ministry had provided leadership in terms of regulations and policies.
“You are aware of some policies, such as the national policies on Climate Change, the Great Green Strategic Plan and a national programme on Drought and Desertification.
“There is also the national guideline on Community-Based Forest Management, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and a National Adaption Strategy and Plan of Action (NASPA).
“We worked with the Minister of Health recently, and got approval for the National Health Waste Management Policy,” the former minister said.
She said the ministry had a number of flagship programmes on erosion, afforestation, climate change and desertification, among others.
Mailafia listed some of the programmes to include Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, a World Bank-assisted project, and the Clean-Cookstove programme, a renewable energy programme.
“President Goodluck Jonathan has also approved the National Environment Summit scheduled to hold on Oct. 7, 2013,’’ she said.
