Kebbi Establishes Shelter Belt
The Kebbi State
Government has said it had established 100 Kilometres of shelter belt as part of efforts to implement the Great Green World shelter-belt project.
It said the shelter-belt was established in Dandi and Arewa local government areas as part of effort to control desert encroachment in the area.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ishaku Daudu, said this in an interview newsmen recently in Birnin Kebbi.
He said the shelter-belt was expected to cover 130 Kilometres of five rows of trees at three metres intervals, while economic trees were provided for planting in farmlands along the route to boost the economic status of the owners.
“The planting of the economic trees on farmlands is aimed at domesticating the project to encourage farmers’ support.” he said
He said 200 hectares would be provided for grazing reserve to further protect the shelter-belt and orchards.
“Each of the project centre will be provided with a tractor, boreholes and other implements to sustain the project.” he said
Daudu, however, called on the Federal Government to fence the orchards and shelter-belts as well as provide alternative water supply to the sites..
He commended the communities for supporting the project.
