Kaduna Electricity Company To Secure 40,000 Pre-Paid Meters
A total of 40, 000 pre-
paid meters would soon be delivered to electricity customers in Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, the Managing Director, Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said last Tuesday.
He told newsmen in Kaduna that the company was discussing with the project monitoring unit of the World Bank, to enable the company to be able to access the meters.
Idris said that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission had also approved an initiative that would allow customers to be able to access and instal the pre-paid meters on their own, under a convenient repayment pattern.
He said about 65 per cent of customers in the area were “unmetered”, adding that the initiative was meant to bridge the gap.
“Proper metering will improve efficiency in supply that a growing number of customers were making difficult to meet up with.
“It is a daily challenge; everyday, people are building new homes, shopping complexes and other new areas of supply.
“It is compounding our ability to meet the metering needs of our customers but we are planning to overcome that, and the effort to bring in 40,000 meters is part of that,” he said.
Idris, however, warned against tampering with the pre-paid meters, saying that any consumer caught doing so would be severely sanctioned in accordance with the law.
