Gov’s Wife Cautions On Education Before Marriage
The wife of the Anambra State governor, Mrs Margaret Obi, has called on women to ensure that the girl-child completed her primary and secondary education before marriage.
Obi made the call in Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area during her annual August tour to sensitise women on economic empowerment and change in their communities.
She said that with the economic realities of the day, it had become imperative that the girl-child be empowered through education to contribute meaningfully to the society.
“When we talk of women empowerment and change in any community, it will start from how we equip our girl-child to face future challenges and contribute meaningfully to her family, community and the state. “Education of the girl-child is now necessary more than before to enable women to take their pride of place both in commerce and politics. “I implore you to ensure that no girl-child is left to idle away or drop out of school; we must encourage and support them to climb to the top of their chosen carrier,’’ she said.
Obi, however, urged the women to be ready to exercise their civic duty by voting and protecting their votes at the October 5 local government polls and the November16 governorship election.
Earlier, the Chairman of Idemili North, Chief Obi Ikpeze, commended the governor’s wife for her motherly gestures to women and vulnerable children in the past seven years.
“You toured the 177 communities in 2008 and 2009 and 10 communities in our council were beneficiaries of this August visit. “In each of the visits, you empowered a minimum of 68 less privileged individuals in various communities in cash and kind. “You encouraged our women to set up co-operative societies to help themselves through collective funds,’’ Ikpeze said.
In his contribution, Mr Olisa Aniunoh, a chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, urged the people of the area and the state to vote the party for continuity and progress of the state.
“Our people should vote for the progress of the state which will serve as a means of saying thank you to Gov. Obi’s sterling leadership and management of our resources,’’ he said.
