The Anambra State gov
ernment said yesterday that the timing of both the governorship and local council polls in the state would save cost, time and effort at ensuring security.
Special Adviser to Governor Peter Obi on Political Matters, Mr Fidel Okafor said in Onitsha that the programming of both elections was “timely and advantageous to all“.
The council and governorship polls have been scheduled to hold on October 5 and November 16 respectively.
Okafor said that arrangement for the elections had reached 70 per cent completion, adding that it indicated the readiness of the state and political parties to go ahead with the elections.
He said, “it is not the same people contesting; the people that are running for local government election are different from people that are running for governor. “Everybody is campaigning for his own election; there is no confusion it creates; so I wonder why people are saying that it is not timely.
“It is even better for the system, it is less costly to do it at the same period so that the political parties will just programme, know that those two months are election months. And they do it and it comes and goes.
“It is going to go on well. The government of Anambra State is sincere about local government elections there is no doubt about that.
“ANSIEC (Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission) is ready and preparing, they are doing everything they should be doing,” he added.
The governor’s aide assured that the state electoral commission would conduct free, fair and credible council polls, adding that APGA as a political party believed in “one-man one-vote doctrine’’.
He, however, urged APGA candidates at the chairmanship and councillorship levels to be hard working and sell their manifestos to their people to earn their confidence and votes.
