Girl, 12, Commits Suicide Over 50 Kobo
A teenage girl who was accused by her parents of stealing their 50 kobo has committed suicide by hanging after she had been flogged for the offence.
The incident, which occurred at Agudama-Epie community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State was said to have thrown the entire coastal community into confusion and mourning.
The parents of the deceased were said to have subjected her into a serious probe, when they discovered that 50 kobo was missing from their safe.
According to reports, the girl’s pleading of innocence was not heeded to as she was thoroughly punished by flogging while other children looked on.
Indigenes of the community are still in shock over the suicide committed by the teenager as they wondered why the girl should take such action.
It was learnt that the girl may have resolved to take her life out of shame to withstand her peers in the community.
Efforts to reach the bereaved parents was not successful as they were said to be indisposed.
When contacted,Police Public Relations Officer in the state,Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident, saying that investigations were going on in the matter.
Akhigbe said the police were also investigating the murder case of a lady who was beaten to death by unidentified persons in Kaiama, Kolokuma/Opokuma local government of the state.
