Flood: Kogi Govt Urges Relocation Of Residents

The Deputy  Governor
of Kogi State, Yomi Awoniyi, has urged people living in flood-prone areas of the state to move to higher ground.
Awoniyi made the call following the announcement by the Minister of Water Resources that water would be released from Jebba and Kainji dams.
A statement issued by the deputy governor’s the press secretary, Mr Michael Abu, recently in Lokoja said Awoniyi advised the affected people to heed flood warnings.
He said the people had been warned that Kogi, Kwara and Niger states could be flooded again if water is released from dams within the country.
He noted that the devastation caused by last year’s flood was unimaginable, saying that the best measure that would help to prevent another loss of lives and property was for people to move  to higher ground.
Awoniyi called on religious, traditional, community and opinion leaders to assist in urging the people to move to higher ground for safety.
He said the state government was fully prepared to fight this year’s flood in view of the arrangements it had put in place.
